Avandia (Rosiglitazone) is an oral diabetes medication which helps you control your blood sugar levels. It is used specifically for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, and not for treating type 1 diabetes. It is also specified for those in which previous other treatments have not resulted in adequate blood sugar level control.
What is this diabetes medication used for?
Avandia is used to control blood sugar levels for the treatment type 2 diabetes. It is sometimes used in combination with other medicines, such as Metformin or sulfonylurea agents. This helps your body use its own insulin better by making the tissues in your body more sensitive to it. The tissues are then better able to detect the signals insulin sends out. This makes the tissue in your body absorb sugar more easily, and in turn, to keep the amount of sugar in your blood at a more regular level.
How to take this drug
Take Avandia exactly as prescribed by your doctor, and make sure to follow all the directions on the prescription label. Your doctor may sometimes change your dose to ensure you get the optimum results. Do not take in higher or lower doses, or for longer than recommended by your doctor.
Your blood sugar levels will need to be monitored frequently, and you may need other tests at your doctor’s office. Low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, occurs to everyone who has diabetes. The symptoms of low blood sugar can include headaches, sweating, irritability, pale skin, hunger, lightheadedness, feeling shaky, or trouble concentrating. Always have an emergency sugar source with you in case you have a sudden drop in blood sugar. Make sure your friends and family know how to help you in the case of an emergency.
Dosage
Your doctor will decide on the dose of Avandia that is suitable for you. It should be taken by mouth once a day (in the morning) or twice a day (in the morning and in the evening) depending on the dosage your doctor has given you. You may take it with or without food. If you should miss a dose, make sure to take the missed dose as soon as possible. Disregard the missed dose if it is close to your next scheduled dose. Do not take more medicine to make up the missed dose.
The usual starting dose of is 4 mg per day, either as a single daily dosage or in 2 separate doses. Avandia is a medicine that works over time, and it may take you anywhere from 8 to 12 weeks to see any effects. Try to take it at the same time every day to help you remember, and have your blood sugar levels tested regularly as your doctor tells you.
Warnings and Precautions
Avandia is not recommended for use with insulin, which may increase your risk of serious heart problems. It should also not be taken along with metformin, in those with kidney or liver impairments, and it is not recommended for children.

Common side effects include:
- Anemia, which can make you feel very weak or tired
- Chest pain (angina)

- Breakthrough bleeding (unexpected vaginal bleeding or spotting) while using oral contraceptives.
- Muscle problems. If you experience muscle tenderness, weakness, or pain that you cannot explain, talk with your doctor. If you experience brownish or discolored urine with your muscle problems, stop taking the drug and call your doctor right away.
- You may experience swelling of the parotid gland (salivary glands located over the jaw, in front of the ears).
